A group of NY artists have got together to organize this benefit. It is a great chance to buy some very cool artwork by the likes of Todd James, Zephyr, Charlie Ahearn, Jane Dickson, and many more. I donated a pic of the Clash onstage with Jimmy Pursey and Steve Jones at the London Music Machine 1979 – pick it up for a song. Seriously people this is the place to be on Monday evening 5-10pm Cristin Tiurney Gallery 548 W 29th St in Chelsea.

Rhythm Revue New York City

Felix Hernandez hosted the 20th Anniversary Rhythm Revue at Roseland last week – Felix is a brilliant DJ known for playing mainly old school soul funk and disco classics from the 60′s 70′s and 80′s on the radio.

He has also been hosting the Rhythm Revue dance party for 20 years – it was a packed event 3000 people danced the ‘Electric Slide’ in line – the mostly over 40′s black crowd dressed to the nines, guys in zoot suits,  ladies in glittery tight tops and heels – a really happy soulful vibe. The next one is a benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims on December 15th – be there and dance your ass off for a good cause.

Hurricane Sandy 2 weeks later

Graffiti on wall in Red Hook – the ‘devil’ hurricane , flooding followed by a snowstorm, has caused so much destruction.

It is almost 2 weeks since Hurricane Sandy devastated some parts of the New York area leaving others untouched. In places like Rockaway, Red Hook and Staten Island people are still without power, no heat, no light, stores shuttered, cold, hungry, no water, many lost their homes. I was in Red Hook today helping clear debris and give out food, so many people are volunteering to help.

Sign outside Red Hook church and community food distribution  center. Life goes on.

Zoot suit in Harlem

Up on 116th Street in Harlem you can buy a zoot suit – lightweight pinstripe – for $125 – shoes, cufflinks, tie to match

Go Go’s

I shot the Go Go’s back in the punk days – Belinda asked me to come to their show in Times Sq last week. It was fun – the ladies still rock.

Barry Wentzell

Had a cup of tea with British photographer Barry Wentzell – he worked for Melody Maker from 1965 -1975 and has some great pics and he’s still using  film. I started shooting for the good ol’ MM mag from 1977 right after Barry.

Greg Lamarche

Don’t miss former graffiti artist Greg Lamarche’s beautiful hand cut paper collages at the Joshua Liner Gallery 548 W 28th Street, 3rd floor until Oct 27th.

JanetteBeckman

Photographing 'The Islington Twins' - the epitome of Mod cool in their parkas, Loakes, sunglasses and trilby's - with her twin lens reflex camera, in the school yard of North London College where she was teaching photography in 1981, having graduated earlier from Central Saint Martins, Beckman never imagined the resulting imager... View morey to feature 6 years later as a full page in The Face, or to later form a 12-foot tall exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She went on to shoot bands and fans, punk, ska, rockabilly, 2 tone and reggae, working from 1977 - 1982 for The Face and Melody Maker.  Moving to New York in 1992, she landed just in time to document the pioneers of hip hop and styles of the 80s.  Beckman says: "I was asked to go to Hollis to photograph the ‘new ‘ group Run DMC for The Face.  Run met me at Hollis subway station and we walked to his street to meet the band, who were just hanging out on a spring day under the trees." Still obsessed with steet style, attitude, youth culture, art and ephemera, she continues to shoot musicians and street style for clients such as Kangol, Schott, and Casio.  Books celebrating her work include:  'Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977-1982' (Powerhouse 2005), "The Breaks, Stylin and Profilin 1982-1990" (Powerhouse 2007), and most recently her photo essay on East LA Mexican gang, ‘El Hoyo Maravilla’ (Dashwood 2011).  Recent exhibitions include: Project Space in LA, Tower Records in Tokyo,  Blender Gallery in Sydney, Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York, colette in Paris, and London's Proud Gallery.
